LagerheadZ Bar & Grill, home to the best craft beer selection in Tarpon Springs, Florida, is excited to be STOP NUMBER 3 for the North Pinellas Pub Riders Viva Las Vegas Pub Crawl on January 14th at 5:30 p.m.!  LagerheadZ is offering a gift certificate towards final prizes and food and drink specials just for the NPPR group!

And who is North Pinellas Pub Riders?  They organize monthly bicycle pub crawls, making stops between Tarpon Springs to the north and Dunedin to the south. “Casual, fun ride at an easy pace so everyone can participate. Focus is on group safety and making new friends. Watch for events posted for each ride, usually on the first Saturday of every month. Different themes every time. Games and prizes as well. Returning riders are encouraged to bring a new rider with them next time. Bicycle lights are required, helmets are advised. Grownups only, please.”

The Zone Lounge  is the first stop, followed by Sawgrass Tiki Bar.  And, drum roll, the third stop is LagerheadZ.  ”This place is new to us as riders, but the owners and staff ( Jeryl, Rick, and Jim) are enthusiastic and I have a great feeling about this place! They also have donated a gift certificate as a prize and have drink and food specials. This will be the only stop on the ride with a full menu, so make sure you grab a bite while you are here.”  Stop number four will be Neptunes followed by stop number five at the Tarpon Elks Club!

Kenny Kopcsik received his culinary training from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.  He is also an alumnus of Florida State University and graduated with a degree in International Economics.

Known for his unrelenting creativity in the kitchen, Chef Kenny has made a name for himself as a culinary journeyman throughout the Tampa Bay Region, where he has performed his art in places such as Salt Rock Grill, Belleview Biltmore, Guppies and Bella Brava. He has studied with such notables as John Ash, Debra Madison, Tom Pritchard and Brack May.

As the newest member of  the LagerheadZ family, Chef Kenny aims to build on the  hospitality excellence of LagerheadZ!  Exceeding customer expectations and focusing on culinary excellence, Chef  Kenny states, “I look forward to  fostering personalized service and creating a memorable experience to every guest that dines at LagerheadZ.”

Curious about the history of karaoke? Our online source, Wikipedia states: “The concept of creating studio recordings that lack the lead vocal has been around for nearly as long as recording itself. Many artists, amateur and professional, perform in situations where a full band/orchestra is either logistically or financially impractical, so they use a “karaoke” recording; they are, however, the original artists. (This is not to be confused with “lip synching,” in which a performer mimes to a previously produced studio recording with the lead vocal intact.)

1960s: Development of audio-visual-recording devices

From 1961–1966, the American TV network NBC carried a karaoke-like series, Sing Along with Mitch, featuring host Mitch Miller and a chorus, which superimposed the lyrics to their songs near the bottom of the TV screen for home audience participation.^[2] The primary difference between Karaoke and sing-along songs is the absence of the lead vocalist.

Sing-alongs (present since the beginning of singing) fundamentally changed with the introduction of new technology. In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, stored audible materials began to dominate the music recording industry and revolutionized the portability and ease of use of band and instrumental music by musicians and entertainers as the demand for entertainers increased globally. This may have been attributable to the introduction of music cassette tapes, technology that arose from the need to customize music recordings and the desire for a “handy” format that would allow fast and convenient duplication of music and thereby meet the requirements of the entertainers’ lifestyles and the ‘footloose’ character of the entertainment industry.

1971: Development of the karaoke machine

There are various disputes about who first invented the name karaoke. One claim is that the karaoke styled machine was invented by Japanese musician Daisuke Inoue^[3] in Kobe, Japan, in 1971.^[4][5] After becoming popular in Japan, karaoke spread by Hideo to East and Southeast Asia during the 1980s and subsequently to other parts of the world.

In Japan, it has long been common to provide musical entertainment at a dinner or a party. Japanese drummer Daisuke Inoue was asked frequently by guests in the Utagoe Kissa, where he performed, to provide a recording of his performance so that they could sing along on a company-sponsored vacation. Realizing the potential for the market, Inoue made a tape recorder that played a song for a 100-yen coin. Instead of giving his karaoke machines away, Inoue leased them out so that stores did not have to buy new songs on their own. Originally, it was considered a somewhat expensive fad, as it lacked the live atmosphere of a real performance and 100 yen in the 1970s was the price of two typical lunches, but it caught on as a popular entertainment. Karaoke machines were initially placed in restaurants and hotel rooms; soon, new businesses called karaoke boxes, with compartmented rooms, became popular. In 2004, Daisuke Inoue was awarded the tongue-in-cheek Ig Nobel Peace Prize for inventing karaoke, “thereby providing an entirely new way for people to learn to tolerate each other.”

Here are some fun Florida alligator facts, courtesy of Wild Florida.com:

“Early Spanish explorers who encountered these reptiles named then “el lagarto” meaning lizard.  Later, settlers called them “allagarto”, which was then corrupted to “alligator”.

Alligators are found only in the southeastern United States, mostly in Florida and coastal portions of Louisiana.  The species is also found in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Georgia, and North and South Carolina.

A large adult alligator can weigh as much as 1000 pounds (455 kg) and may live to be 30 years old. The longest alligator of record was killed deep in a Louisiana swamp by E. A. McLlhenny in the early 1900’s. The beast was too big to get out of the swamp so he estimated the animal’s length using his rifle; it measured about 584 cm (19.1 ft).  The record for Florida is a 531 cm (17.2 ft) alligator killed at Lake Apoka in 1956.

Alligators are olive-brown to black with creamy white around the jaws, and on the neck and belly. They have a broad snout, and 74-80 conical teeth, some of which can be as large as your little finger. Below each tooth is a replacement, which appears when the primary tooth is damaged or worn. However, these teeth are not designed for chewing – they are used for grabbing and holding. The muscles that close the jaw can exert literally tons of pressure, but muscles for opening the jaw are weak, and an alligator’s jaw can be held closed with a thick rubber band.  This fact is skillfully exploited during most alligator wrestling shows.

Alligators live mainly in freshwater swamps and marshes, but also in rivers, lakes and ponds.  They can live in brackish water for short periods, and are occasionally seen in mangrove swamps.   Some 1.5 million alligators live in Florida, many of them in close proximity to people.  They are easy to see, often sunning themselves beside roadside ‘borrow’ ponds. Look for a low ‘V’ shaped wake with small bumps at the apex.”
